Drop Shipping - Should you?

This is BS. We all have seen these financial gurus on the front page of our YouTube advertisements selling you these magical courses that will make you rich. You can easily identify these gurus if

• they have a super car in the background - possibly a Lamborghini or a Ferrari

• they have a stack of cash beside them

• they are standing in front of a huge house

You should 100% steer clear of these people because they just want to make money off your subscriptions. Simply asking,

If they found the magic formula, why don't they just do it themselves to get rich?

makes it seem obvious.

Well, they are correct, aren't they? Didn't you see the Lamborghini in the background? In all seriousness, avoid them. However, they do talk about a very real concept called drop shipping. It is a term that you may or may not have come across. It is a very simple model where you find a product online and market it using your own website and sell it for a higher price. When a customer buys it from your website, you buy the item from the original website and ship it directly to the customer and you keep the profit whilst never receiving the product!

So, at first glance, this sounds

• Too good to be true

• Illegal

• Very little to no work

It is a fact that this is legal as long as you never claim that you own the product or the rights to it. This business model incorporates a concept known as "Business Arbitrage". It simply means exploiting the difference in prices in 2 different markets. Henceforth, it is not illegal and so easy to do, I tried it out when I was only 14 ( more about this on https://www.nihaalmanaf.com/post/why-i-started-a-business-at-the-age-of-14 ). I think the best way to analyze this model and decide whether or not you should do it, is to explicitly state the pros and cons of drop shipping ( as understood from personal experience ). I will try to keep my points objective so as to avoid any discrepancies.

Pros

• Very easy to set up

• Very cheap to set up ( costs only consist of website costs )

• Low risk

• Lots of experience to gain in marketing

Cons

• Very difficult to stand out due to competitive markets

• Steep learning curve

• Difficult to get sales

My personal advice is to try it out! There are more pros than cons and sure, even if you lose a bit of money, it is very exhilarating to see your store go live and check in on any sales and marketing your products through various means such as Facebook advertisements or celebrity endorsements. You will learn so much in the process such as B2C or B2B advertising and increasing your conversion rates. I implore you to embark on this journey to learn as much as you can. Please do not be disheartened when your business comes crashing down because the journey in this scenario can be so much more worthwhile than the destination.
